The Xylella fastidiosa is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen that affects a broad spectrum of ornamental plants and fruit trees.

The carrier of this bacterium is represented by various species of insects and many plants can serve as silent breeding grounds, with no obvious symptoms and with low level of bacterial growth, and can trigger significant damage on more susceptible adjacent plantations.

Following the colonization of the bacterium and subsequent occlusion of xylem vessels through the formation of biofilms, affected plants show deteriorations and quali-quantitative reductions in production, as well as damage to the leaves and the fruits.

Farmers and regional reference centers for Phytopathology analysis are seeking, especially during recent years when the epidemic associated to Xylella fastidiosa has affected southern Italy, a fast, simple and sensitive diagnostic system for the detection of this bacterium to preserve their plants and crops.
